Why We Love This Recipe

This is the easiest recipe for stewed apples you'll need. Mum has been making stewed apples for as long as I remember and I freaking LOVE them!

You'll love this recipe because;

  • it's a great way to use up leftover apples
  • it's so quick and easy to make
  • they're great topped on desserts, breakfasts or to put in pies and cakes (hello my apple shortcake)
  • it requires a few simple ingredients

Recipe Ingredients

There are only 3 ingredients to this recipe;

Apples - I use green apples aka Granny Smith apples. They hold up well, and aren't as sweet as other apples like pink lady apples. You'll need about 5-6 large apples.

Sugar - castor sugar is best, if you don't have castor sugar regular white sugar is also fine to use. I use a ⅓ cup and it balances out the acidity of the apples beautifully. If you're using a sweet apple I would reduce the sugar.

Water - a ¼ cup of water just helps the apples stew more.

Optional Cinnamon - if you want you can also add cinnamon however I prefer keeping the apples plain so that you can adjust the flavour when you use them.

Step By Step Instructions

Preparing the apples is super simple.

Step One - peel your apples using a sharp peeler

Step Two - cut apples into halves, then into quarters.

Step Three - use a sharp knife to cut out the core of the apples, then slice into even slices.

Step Four - One sliced, combine your apples with ⅓ cup of sugar, and ¼ of a cup of sugar in a medium sized saucepan.

Step Five - Bring to a boil for 7 minutes, then reduce heat and simmer for a further 10 minutes.

Step Six - The apples should be soft and starting to break down. Use a wooden spoon to mash up your apples.

Recipe FAQ and Tips

What Can I use Stewed Apples for?

There are so many different dishes you can serve your apples with. They are great;

  • topped on cereal for breakfast
  • with yogurt and cinnamon
  • topped on overnight oats
  • on pancakes
  • with ice cream (my personal favourite!)
  • made into cakes or pies

How To Store These Apples?

These keep in a air tight container for up to 4 days. You can also freeze apples up to 3 months in an air tight container. When you're ready to eat them, defrost them in the microwave to use.

    Just an FYI it says "One sliced, combine your apples with ⅓ cup of sugar, and ¼ of a cup of sugar in a medium sized saucepan" I gather it's 1/3c sugar and 1/4c water. Just about to try the recipe 🙂

    Perfect recipe without any extra ingredients that are not needed. Only change I did was use brown sugar as that’s how my Nan likes it.
