Chocolate lovers unite! I am a mad sweet tooth, and I always reach out for a chocolate dessert when hosting friends and family. Alongside these chocolate mousse tarts, my Chocolate Chip Brownies are an absolute favourite, as are my Chocolate Meringues when you're looking for something a bit lighter.
While I love cooking most of my food from scratch, I do also like taking shortcuts, especially as a busy Mum who is often short on time. My philosophy on food is that if I have the time and energy, I will try to cook from scratch, but sometimes taking the easy way is also ok!
This is why I love these chocolate tarts - they are a simple version of a chocolate mousse without the fuss and hassle of making it the traditional way. Just two ingredients are all you need to make a creamy, decadent cheat's chocolate mousse! Far simpler than my Flourless Chocolate Torte but just as tasty!

Why We Love This Recipe
- So Simple - just two ingredients plus one store bought items is all you need to make these tarts. Chocolate, cream and mini tart shells! The perfect dessert then you're short on time but still need that 'wow' factor.
- Quick to Make - they are very quick to make coming together in under 15 minutes, then are left in the fridge to set.
- Make Ahead - these are great to make ahead. You can make the chocolate mousse the night before, then simply fill the tarts when you're ready for dessert.
- Transportable - they transport great as well. They can either be transported fully assembled, or by keeping the mousse separated in an air tight container. Either way, these make a great dish for a pot luck or family gathering.
- Deliciously Decadent - a chocolate lovers dream dessert!
💕 These chocolate tarts are the perfect sweet finish to your at-home date night. Pair them with my Lamb Ragu with Pappardelle and my Meat and Cheese Board for two to create a restaurant-worthy menu that is both indulgent and stress-free. 💕

Key Ingredients

*see the recipe card for the full ingredient list and how to make these tarts.*
- Dark Cooking Chocolate - I use dark baking chocolate (70% is ideal) for this recipe. You can either use block chocolate or chocolate chips. If you prefer it sweeter, use milk chocolate.
- Whipping Cream - it must be whipping cream. If you don't use heavy whipping cream, the mousse will not be fluffy and light.
- Store Bought Tart Shells - These are found in most supermarkets in the bakery section or gourmet food stores. Mini or medium size work best for this recipe.
Chocolate Mousse Tartlets Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Melt your chocolate either in the microwave or by using the double-boiler method. (see recipe notes for options). Set aside to cool.

Step 2: Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip your cream until it's light and fluffy. Do not over-whip otherwise you'll end up with butter!

Step 3: Fold the slightly cooled chocolate into the whipped cream.

Step 4: Pipe or spoon the chocolate into the tart tins.
Expert Tip 👩🍳
Use your microwave to speed up the process of melting your chocolate. Microwave the dark chocolate in increments of 30-40 seconds, stirring after each time with a spatula. Make sure to only do short bursts to not burn your chocolate!
Chocolate Tarts FAQs
Short answer - no! You can use a spoon to dollop the mousse into the tart shells. I just enjoy using piping bags because they look pretty.
Do be aware though, that when you pipe, start in the centre of the tart and gently squeeze until the tart is full. If you pipe around in circles your tarts ended up looking a little bit like 💩.
This is also an easy way to melt your chocolate that I think results in smoother chocolate. Place your chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Fill a saucepan with water slightly smaller than your bowl's base so the bowl fits on top without touching the water. Melt the chocolate over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate melts. Do not let any part of the chocolate touch the water, as it will seize and not work properly.
I love topping my tarts with fresh berries. Strawberries and raspberries are acidic fruits that will cut through the richness of the chocolate. You could also add shredded coconut or shaved chocolate. At Easter time crushed mini eggs would be perfect too!
These chocolate mousse tartlets will keep for 1-3 days in the fridge. Make sure to cover them well in an airtight container.
Yes! This is why they're so great. Whip up the mousse the night before and store it in an air tight container until you're ready to fill the tarts. Take the mousse out of the fridge 10 minutes before you're ready to assemble the tarts to give the mousse time to soften.
